Agenda
What is theFamilyEngagementNetwork?
Riverside County Office of Education(RCOE) offers countywide participantsregularly scheduled opportunities toexpand their knowledge of effectivefamily engagement strategies, obtainfree or low-cost parent resources, andshare ideas with others actively workingin the area of family engagement.
To create the kinds of school-familypartnerships that raise studentachievement, improve local communities, and increase public support, we need tounderstand the difference between familyinvolvement and family engagement.
One of the dictionary definitions of involveis "to enfold or envelope," whereas one ofthe meanings of engage is "to cometogether and interlock." Thus, involvement implies doing to; in contrast, engagement implies doing with.

Priority 1: Basic Services
Providing all students with access to fully credentialedteachers in their subject areas, as well as instructionalmaterials that align with State Standards, and safe, properlymaintained school facilities. (CAPTA)
Key questions:
•Is instruction provided by qualified, credentialedteachers in all subject areas?
•Do our students use textbooks and relevant materialsaligned to current state standards?
•Are school facilities in working order?
•How are we improving or increasing services for fosteryouth, low-income youth and English Language Learnerstudents in the area of basic school services?
Implementation of State Standards includes CA English LanguageArts and Math standards, Next Generation Science Standards, andEnglish Language Development Standards along with othercontent standards. New learning standards help students developcritical thinking skills and prepare them to be civically engaged andcollege- and career-ready. (CAPTA)
Key questions:
•How have our teachers and support staff receivedprofessional development in the new CA State Standardsand how to effectively apply them in the classroom?
•How can different areas of study be integrated to enhancelearning?
•How can we ensure that all students have access to statestandards academic content?
•What outreach efforts do we use so that all parents areaware of the new state standards and assessments?
Parent involvement means efforts by the school district andschools to seek input from all parents, and to engage parentsas partners in decision-making. (CAPTA)
Key questions:
•Do families feel welcomed, valued and connected toeach other and the school in our community?
•Are parents, staff and our community partners workingtogether to support student success at home and atschool?
•Is it easy for parents, School Site Councils, and othercommittees to communicate and work with school anddistrict administrators and staff?

Student engagement means providing students withprograms, course work and opportunities — both in and out ofthe classroom — that motivate them and keep them in school.(CAPTA)
A growing body of research shows that school climatestrongly influences students' motivation to learn and improveacademic achievement. When school members feel safe, valued, cared for, respected, and engaged, learning increases.(CA Department of Education)
How do we measure success (metrics)?:
•Student suspension rates
•Student expulsion rates
•Other local measures (School Climate surveys)
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/ss/se/schoolclimate.asp
Discuss:
•What might we see in our LCAP to address “schoolclimate”?
•What are some parent engagement actions that couldsupport “school climate”?
Other student outcomes mean measurements of studentperformance in other required areas of study. (CAPTA)
Key Questions:
•How well are our students across all student groups doing oncollege entrance exams such as the SAT or ACT?
•What multiple measures are used to assess and improvestudent outcomes?
•How can our student outcomes be improved?
•How can services for low-income students, English LanguageLearners and foster youth be improved and increased toenhance their performance outcomes in these study areas?
•How can stronger family-school partnerships support studentsuccess in these areas?
