Why Study Chemistry?
Students majoring in chemistry have the opportunity toengage in research projects with department faculty andto gain experience with modern instrumental techniquesincluding gas and liquid chromatography; ultra-violet,visible, infra-red, Raman, fluorescence, and atomicabsorption spectrophotometry; nuclear magneticresonance; and x-ray diffraction. Upon graduation, ourstudents are knowledgeable, experiences andindependent laboratory workers.
Student Learning Outcomes:
•Demonstrate a broad-based knowledge of majorconcepts in the areas of inorganic, organic, analyticaland physical chemistry;
•Demonstrate sufficient preparation in chemistry tosuccessfully compete in a graduate or professionalprogram or to realize employment in a chemistry- orbiochemistry-related field;
•Demonstrate a capacity to use modern instrumentationand classical techniques for the analysis and/orseparation of chemicals and an ability to interpret data;
•Demonstrate effective oral and written communicationskills and critical thinking skills as related to the field ofchemistry;
•Demonstrate knowledge of safe practices in thehandling, usage and disposal of chemicals.
