Eleanor Roosevelt
•FDR’s wife Eleanor was the first veryinfluential, very vocal First Lady
•Very interested in humanitarian and socialprogress
•She traveled all over the US and reporteddirectly to FDR on what she saw around theDepressed nation (domestic issues)
•Helped encourage FDR to appoint FrancesPerkins to cabinet
Opposition to the New Deal
•Some conservatives thought FDR made thegovernment too large & too strong
•Some liberals thought FDR had not gone farenough nor done enough
•Huey Long of Louisiana may have been hisloudest critic and proposed a program ofShare Our Wealth clubs that would guaranteea home, an education, a job, food and clothesfor every American
Court Packing Scheme
•In 1937, FDR tried to reorganize the SupremeCourt by adding new judges
•FDR wanted to add supporters to the Court sohis New Deal programs would not be injeopardy
