In S3 we devoted a lot of time to reading for thesereasons:
Reading is fun.
Reading improves our confidence withhandling texts.
Reading improves our awareness of howto use writing techniques.
Reading improves our knowledge ofvocabulary.
Reading influences and improves ourwriting.
Reading – Analysis and Evaluation
We expect you:
To take responsibility forkeeping up your personalreading (novels, newspapers etc).
To be active readers –thinking about the purposeof a text; identifying writingtechniques and their effects- this is analysing andevaluating.
You can expect from us:
Opportunities for personalreading.
Support to build your skillsfrom S3 so you can besuccessful in identifying thepurpose of a text, writingtechniques and theireffects.
Critical Essays
These are pieces of writing about texts westudy.
These essays show how much you understandabout what a writer has tried to do.
What you can expect from your N4experience in English
Listening!
There will be a realemphasis on theimportance oflistening.
We will be looking forevidence ofsuccessful listening.
Listening – Analysis and Evaluation
We expect you:
To show understanding ofwhat you are listening to.
To show awareness of howtone of voice, volume etcaffects meaning.
To show awareness of howbody language affectsmeaning.
You can expect from us:
Support in developinglistening skills, incombination with talkingskills.
Questioning andobservation to gatherevidence of your listening.
Creation and Production UNIT
To pass this unit, you will be able to:
•Create and produce straightforward writtentexts.
•Take part in straightforward spokeninteractions.

Writing!
By now you will have triedmany different types ofwriting.
Stories

Personal / Reflective
Persuasive
Writing to inform(articles, posters etc)
We will build onthat knowledge toraise the quality ofyour writing evenfurther.
Creative

Writing – Creation and Production
We expect you:
•To select even bettervocabulary.
•To focus on spelling.
•To carefully considerparagraphing andpunctuation.
•To write in detail.
•To explain your pointscarefully.
•To produce pieces of writingat least 300 words long.

•To be set the challenge ofcreating and producingwriting that reflects the bestof your ability.

Talk is another excellent way of demonstrating andcontributing what you know.
We will develop our skills with:

Talking!
Talking – Creation and Production
We expect you:
To participate in all talktasks.
To develop skills in a varietyof talk situations.
To become able enough tosustain a talk situation for atleast 3 minutes.
You can expect from us:
A variety of talkopportunities – formal andinformal.
Support in developing yourtalk skills.
Added Value Unit
You will be independently required to useyour advancing language skills in reading,listening, writing and talking, to investigatea chosen topic.
What is required from you?
•Information selected carefully from at least 2 texts.
•Evidence of your skills can be presented either as apiece of writing, or as a talk.
•Respond to questions about your finished product.
Literacy UNIT
In order to complete National 4 successfully, youmust demonstrate a standard of literacy –reading and writing accurately without support.
