HISTORY
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William J.Morgan, who was physical education director of theYMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He developed thegame to provide an indoor game for the winter months inwhich relatively large groups of men could participate ina small gym. The principal features of tennis wereemployed, but the net was raised and the players struckthe bladder of a basketball with their hands in stead ofracquets.

The play begins with a serve by the right backplayer. The serve consists of hitting the ball withthe hand so that it goes clearly over the net andwithin the boundaries designated. The receivingteam must return the ball over the net before ittouches the floor. Each team may hit the ball amaximum of three times in returning it across thenet.

The ball is returned back and forth until one team makesan error. Only the serving team may score points. If thereceiving team commits a fault, a point is scored. If theserving team makes the error or commits a fault, sideoutis called and the other team serves following the rotationof players.
The ball must be clearly hit in volleyball; it may not cometo rest momentarily in the hands or on the arms. A playermay not hit the ball twice in succession.

Scoring
The failure of the receiving team to return the ball legallyover the net into the opponent’s court scores one pointfor the serving team. A game is won when a team scoresa 2-point lead with 15 or more points. The score for aforfeited game is 15-0. A match is won by the team thatfirst scores two of three games.

Fundamental Skills and Techniques.
The most fundamental skill to be learned is the ability topass the ball to a teammate, which is required on almostall plays. A forearm pass should be used to receiveserves, low balls, and spikes. The forearm pass is usedto recover the opponents’ attack called a “dig.” A set is ahigh pass that is generally the second play by a team torelay the ball for the spiker. A spike is a ball hit forciblyfrom a height above the net. A kill is a spike that isimpossible to return. Blocking is a defensive play thatattempts to stop the returning of the ball over the net.
