oShel Silverstein was born on September 25,1932.
oBorn in Chicago, Illinois
oAt 12, he began an interest in drawing.
oGrew up in a lower class neighborhood.
oInstead of playing baseball with his friends,he stayed inside and drew cartoons andwrote.
Shel, All Grown Up-
oGraduated from Roosevelt High School in 1948.
oAfter high school, he attended Chicago Academyof Fine Arts.
oLater attended Roosevelt University.
oHe dropped out in 1953 and joined the Army.

Shel, The Writer-
oShel’s first published book was entitled, “Take Ten,” and includedhis cartoons.
oAs an author, he was most successful with his book, “The GivingTree.”
oHe introduced young readers to his humorous poetry with hisbook, “Where the Sidewalk Ends.”
oAll of his books included his black and white illustrations.

Shel’s Final Days-
oShel passed away on May 10, 1999, in Key West, Florida.
oHe died from heart failure at the age of 68.
oAlthough he is no longer alive, his works are
     still greatly appreciated by children and adults alike.
