What should I wear?

•It is easier if you wear a skirt or trousers and nota dress

Who will I meet at the BreastScreening Centre?

The Receptionist will

ask:

•Your name andaddress

•Your date of birth(birthday)

•Your telephonenumber

You can then sit down

and wait

•The Radiographer isthe person who takesbreast test

•All staff taking the X-rays are women

Where do I have to go?

•You will be takenthrough to a differentwaiting area

•This is a ladies onlywaiting area

What will I be asked to do?

•There are changingrooms where you canundress

•You will need to takeyour bra off and putyour top back on

•You can then take aseat and wait to becalled

What will I be asked to do?

•Sometimes you maybe given a gown towear and a basket toput your clothes in

•You need to take offyour bra and top andput the gown on

•Once you havechanged you can takea seat

•Your friend, supportworker, relative ornurse can stay withyou while you wait tobe called

Can someone come with me?

•When you have your breast X-ray taken, theperson with you will usually wait for you in thewaiting area

What will the Radiographer ask me

•She will ask you yourname, address anddate of birth (birthday)again

•She will talk abouthow she will take yourbreast test

•You can ask her anyquestions if you areunsure

What other questions may beasked?

The Radiographer may also ask ifyou have had:

•A breast test before

•Have any scars on your breasts

•Have had any treatment to yourbreasts

•Have noticed any changes to yourbreasts

Don’t worry if you don’t know theanswer to these questions

Will the test hurt?

•You may find the testuncomfortable

•It may hurt for a shorttime

•Your breast may be alittle bit red or soreafter the X-ray

Having your breast test

•A female Radiographerwill take you to the X-raymachine

•She will show you how tostand

•Then she will lift yourbreast onto the X raymachine

Having a breast x-ray

•Each breast is pressedfirmly between the X rayplates

•Two pictures will be takenof each breast

•Sometimes they mayneed to take morepictures

What should I do?

•Try not to tense up

•Stay calm andrelaxed

•Thinking of somethingrelaxing may help

•It only takes a fewminutes

What do I do if I want to STOP?

•Tell the Radiographer if you want to STOP thetest at any time

What happens after the breasttest has been taken?

•When the breast testhas been taken youcan go back into thechanging room

•Then you can getdressed

•A doctor called aRadiologist will look atyour X-rays

•Your X-rays will looka little bit like this
