•Allow your child to practice “endurance” reading. Forchildren that have a hard time sitting down to read forten minutes, push them to read for longer periods oftime.

•Help your child to self monitor for understanding.

•Ask your child questions about what they are reading.Try to get them to explain the plot and describecharacters’ actions.

•Work with your child using informational text such asmenus, pamphlets or brochures.

•Practice released test items for Reading.

Math will be given in 2 sections – Calculator Activeand Calculator Inactive

Encourage calculator use and make sure that yourchild is using the calculator appropriately to solvemath problems. The calculator is only helpful if it isused correctly.

Review strategies for solving math problems. Pose aproblem and see how many different ways your childcan solve it. This encourages higher order thinkingskills.

Caution your child about “distractors.”

What Can a Parent Do?

•Make sure students arrive early to school andhave a chance to keep with their normalroutines. Feeling rushed on the day of a big testwill not help them to feel relaxed.

•Set a regular early bedtime for students. 6 to 9year-olds require 10-11 hours of sleep per nightfor maximum benefit. 10-11 year-olds require alittle less at 9-10 hours of sleep.

•Students should have a healthy breakfast everyday before school. Learning and trying yourbest is hard work!

Make sure your child eats a good breakfast withprotein. Carbs may cause the “crash and burn”syndrome.

Encourage your child to have a positive attitude.

Remind your child that there is absolutely no cellphone use during testing sessions. Cell phone usewill cause a misadministration. So, cell phones will beturned off and collected during testing sessions.

Once testing is completed and materials arecollected, students will be allowed to read books ormagazines.
