Maths & Literacy

Maths

• Following the 2014 National Curriculum – Number & PlaceValue; Statistics; Geometry & Measurement – large emphasison Number in the early half of the year. Emphasis on childrenbecoming independent and able to apply their learningindividually in a range of contexts.

• Children are taught in small mixed-ability groups with tasksdifferentiated according to individual need.

Literacy

• follow objectives of the 2014 National Curriculum

• children taught in mixed groups of approx. 20 for writing andapproximately 25 for reading (with one smaller group)

• spelling is taught in differentiated spelling groups

• increased emphasis on spelling, grammar and punctuation

Behaviour

Our school policy aims to create a positive learning environment whichconsistently recognises, encourages and rewards good behaviour.

Year 6 – lots of responsibilities; role models for younger children

When children choose to behave well they will be praised and rewarded by staffin a number of ways: with house points, motivational stickers, verbal praise,certificates etc..

When children choose to behave inappropriately, there are consequences withwhich they are familiar. These consequences are consistent in each class andare displayed clearly.

Follow school policy of distributing behaviour cards each Friday, leading toaward of Bronze, Silver, Gold & Headteacher’s behaviour certificate

Homework

Homework is generally set to consolidate and

support Literacy and Mathematics objectives.

Additional independent research or preparation work maybe set for other subject areas, throughout the year.

Each child has a homework diary, which gives details ofhomework requirements for that week. The diary shouldbe in school every day and signed weekly by a parent orcarer.

Homework will usually be set over a period of severaldays.

Please don’t consider homework to be a problem!

P.E.

Wednesday and Thursday

We consider PE to be an integral part of a broad andbalanced curriculum. Please ensure all items of yourchild’s PE Kit, (yellow shirt, plain black shorts andblack pumps) are clearly labelled and in a namedP.E.bag.

P.E. kits should remain in school throughout the weekto allow some flexibility with timetabling of gamessessions.

During Winter, children are encouraged to bring atracksuit & trainers for outdoor games but to takethese home with them.
