Program title: Developing sustainable surveillance and response forseasonal and avian influenza.
Goal: To establish a comprehensive epidemiologic and virologicsurveillance system for influenza that can identify and respond toseasonal and avian influenza in a timely manner.
Outcomes:
•Harmonization and strengthening of routine influenza-relatedsurveillance systems in a target area (province).
•Harmonization of influenza-related surveillance output at thecentral level.
•Assessing disease burden of influenza (East Jakarta Project)
•Strengthening laboratory-based surveillance through theinfluenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness(SARI) sentinel systems.
Outcome 1: Harmonization and strengtheningof routine influenza-related surveillancesystems in a target area (province).
1.To improve the quality of data generated bythe ILI and SARI laboratory basedsurveillance systems.
2.To improve the quality of data generated byEWARS.
3.To improve quality of data of pneumoniasurveillance.

East Jakarta Project
Surveillance conducted daily in 6 sentinel hospitals & weekdays in 4sentinel health centers.
Using WHO case definitions for Influenza Like Illnes (ILI) and SevereAcute Respiratory Infection (SARI).
Nasal and throat swabs collected from all ILI and SARI patients.
All samples tested for influenza by RT-PCR daily
Laboratories: RS. Sulianti Saroso, Provincial Laboratory of DKIJakarta, and NIHRD Laboratory as national referral laboratory.
Specimens positive for influenza A are subtyped
Seasonal influenza subtypes (H1 seasonal, H1N1-2009, H3).
Avian H5.
Data Collection:
Interview using ILI and SARI Case Forms.
Data reporting using online system – a designated web for EastJakarta Surveillance.
Outcome 4: Strengthening lab-based surveillancethrough ILI and SARI sentinel systems
1.To monitor sentinelsurveillance system sites,encourage feedback andcoordination of activities in thelaboratory network forinfluenza.
