Burke’s Expedition
•Robert O’Hara Burke travelled from Melbourne tothe Gulf of Carpentaria.
•He took with him 2 years worth of food and 6 tonnesof firewood. He travelled with 28 horses and wagonsand 24 camels. The supplies he took with him were80 pairs of shoes,20 camp beds,30cabbage treehats,57 buckets, brandy, persevered fruit, vegetableand firearms. They also carried beads with them for agift to the Aboriginals.

Towards the end of June 1861, Burke and Kingdecided to return upstream to the Dig Tree tosee if a rescue party had arrived. Wills becametoo weak to continue, so he was left behind athis own insistence at Breerily Waterhole withsome food, water and shelter. Burke and Kingcontinued upstream for another two days untilBurke became too weak to continue. The nextmorning Burke died. King stayed with his bodyfor two days and then returned downstream toBreerily Waterhole where he found that Willshad died as well.
