Assessment Activities

There are 4 primary assessment activities for this course –

1.Individual Assignment – Body of Evidence OR IndividualProject Management Plan

2.Team Assignment – Case Study Project Management Plan

3.Unit Tests

4.Forum Participation – online students only

Primary Assessment Activities

•Individual Portfolio – Body of Evidence

–Actual work-based projects for students already working in a project management environment

–Preparation of a portfolio of evidence covering each of the 8 units

–Combined with direct questioning by the assessor and third party workplace reports

•Individual Project Management Plan

–Preparation of a comprehensive project management plan for an agreed personal project orcase study

–Combined with direct questioning by the assessor and analysis activities which demonstrateunderstanding of the elements of competency

•Team Assignment

–Pairs of teams of small groups of three students

–Produce a project management plan for a selected case study

–Shows how they work in a team, organise activities and apply project management techniques

•Unit Tests

–Assess knowledge of the Project Management Body of Knowledge and the Australian NationalCompetency Standards for Project Management for each of the 8 units of study and theintroductory unit

•Forum Participation

–Application of the project management standards, tools and techniques in different scenarios

Selection of Assessment Activities

•The same types of assessment activities are applied toeach of the 8 units of study

•Individual Activity 1a or 1b will be chosen by eachstudent via consultation with the facilitator. The choicewill depend on the student’s work situation.

•Students working in a project managementenvironment, or regularly undertaking volunteer orpersonal projects, are encouraged to undertake Activity1a – the Individual Portfolio

•Students with no current projects are encouraged toundertake Activity 1b – the Individual ProjectManagement Plan.

Assessment Due Dates

•During each unit of study you will participate in Forumsthat will count towards your assessment of competency.There will be a cut-off date for each Forum, two weeksafter the Unit has ended.

•At the end of each unit of study you will be required to –

1.Undertake your Unit Test. These can be completed up untilthe end of semester.

2.Submit the relevant component of your team assignment(please refer to the Course Delivery schedule for exactdates).

•At mid semester and end of semester you will berequired to –

1.Submit your Individual Assessment (please refer to theCourse Delivery schedule for exact dates).

•You will receive instructions from your facilitator as totheir preferred mechanism for submission

•Generally –

•Unit Tests that count towards your mark are completedonline using Tests and Tasks

•Team and Individual Assessments are submitted viahardcopy online using the attachment feature ofAssignments, depending on instructions from your facilitator

•Forum participation is assessed based on the frequency andquality of your contributions

Assessment Submission

Assessment Grading

•To be awarded the Certificate IV in Project Managementlearners must achieve competency in ALL 8 units ofstudy.

•All units of study in this course are Ungraded. Studentswill be assessed as either Competent or Not YetCompetent.

•A nominal mark is generally calculated for eachassessment and for the overall level of achievement ineach unit of study.

Competency requires a grade of 65% or higher

•Awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement can beawarded for students with grades of 85% and above.

Assessment Resubmissions

•The student result is based on the grades for theassessment tasks and evidence provided to meet thecriteria for competence as specified for each unit ofstudy.

•Where students are not deemed competent after the firstattempt, a resubmission may be requested and can begranted at the facilitator’s discretion.

•Resubmissions must be made as soon as possible afterthe initial assessment, preferably within two weeks.

•Extensions for assessment activities (particularly theIndividual Assignment) can be granted where there areextenuating or difficult circumstances.

•Students in this situation must contact their facilitatorimmediately so that alternative arrangements can beagreed.

Assessment Strategy

•The assessment strategy for this course is based on theprinciples of validity, reliability and fairness.

•Assessment Activities are designed to -

cover a range of skills and knowledge required to demonstrateachievement of the unit and course aims

collect evidence on a number of occasions and in a variety ofcontexts and situations – one source of evidence is not sufficient

be appropriate to the knowledge, skills, methods of delivery andneeds of learners

assist assessors to interpret evidence consistently

•Assessment activities and evidence collection can takeplace in the workplace or in a simulated environment.

Assessment Strategy

•It is critical that the selection of the IndividualAssessment Activity (whether the Individual Portfolio orthe Individual Project Management Plan) provides thefollowing opportunities for the learner –

use up to date equipment and software

reflect time pressures and deadlines

show the complexity of dealing with multiple tasks

involve prioritising amongst competing tasks

work with others in a team

communicate with diverse groups

find, discuss and test solutions to problems

explore health and safety issues

answer practically oriented, applied knowledge questions

show the level of written and verbal expression sufficient for, but notexceeding, the work requirements
