St. Theresa having a vision
Her experience of religious ecstasy inher encounter with the angel isdescribed BY HER as follows:
“I saw in his hand a long spear of gold, andat the iron's point there seemed to be a littlefire. He appeared to me to be thrusting it attimes into my heart, and to pierce my veryentrails; when he drew it out, he seemed todraw them out also, and to leave me all onfire with a great love of God. The pain was sogreat, that it made me moan; and yet sosurpassing was the sweetness of thisexcessive pain, that I could not wish to be ridof it. The soul is satisfied now with nothingless than God. The pain is not bodily, butspiritual; though the body has its share in it. Itis a caressing of love so sweet which nowtakes place between the soul and God, that Ipray God of His goodness to make himexperience it who may think that I am lying”

Holofernes was an Assyrian general who was about to destroy Judith's home, thecity of Bethulia. In the story, Judith, a beautiful widow, is able to enter the tent ofHolofernes because of his desire for her. Overcome with drink, he passes out andis decapitated by Judith; his head is taken away in a basket (often depicted ascarried by an female servant).
