WHAT IS A VIRTUAL KEYBOARD?
A Virtual Keyboard is a projection keyboardthat is projected and touched on any surface.
A virtual keyboard consists of a laser thatprojects an image of a keyboard onto a flatsurface which can then be typed on as if it wereactually there.
The keyboard watches your fingers movementsand translates that action into keystrokes inthe device.

The Virtual Keyboardattaches to handheldsand projects the imageof a full-size keyboardonto the surface of thedesk where thehandheld is placed,allowing the user toinput text without aphysical keyboard.

COMPONENTS OF VIRTUAL KEYBOARD
This system consists of three modules,
1.The sensor module,
2.IR-light source and
3.The pattern projector

SENSOR MODULE:
The Sensor Module serves as the eyes ofthe Keyboard Perception technology.
The Sensor Module operates by locatingthe user's fingers in 3D space and trackingthe intended keystrokes.
INFRA RED LIGHT SOURCE
An invisible infra-red beam is projectedabove the virtual keyboard. Finger makeskeystroke on virtual keyboard. This breaksinfrared beam and infrared light is reflectedback to projector.

The Sensor chip in the sensor moduledetermines where the infrared beam wasbroken. Detected co-ordinates determineactions or characters to be generated.
PATTERN PROJECTOR
The Pattern Projector or optional printedimage presents the image of the keyboard ofthe system. This image can be projected on anyflat surface. The projected image is that of astandard ‘QWERTY’ keyboard, with all the keysand control functions as in the keyboard.

HOW DOES VIRTUAL KEYBOARD WORKS?
Step1: Template creation (Pattern Projector)
A template of the desired interface isprojected onto the adjacent interfacesurface.
The template is produced byilluminating a specially designed, highlyefficient holographic optical element with ared diode laser.

Step2: Reference Plane Illumination(IR Light
Source)
An infra-red plane of light is generatedjust above, and parallel to, the interfacesurface. This light is invisible to the user andcovers a few millimeters above the surface.
When the user touches a key position onthe interface surface light is reflected fromthis plane in the vicinity of the key anddirected towards the sensor module.

Step3: Map Reflection Co-ordinate (Sensor Module)
Reflected light from user interactions withthe interface surface is passed through an infra-red filter and imaged on to a CMOS image sensorin the sensor module.
Custom hardware embedded in the sensorchip (the Virtual Interface Processing Core) thenmakes a real-time determination of the location ofthe reflected light.
The processing core can track multiple reflectionevents simultaneously and can thus support bothmultiple keystrokes and single keystrokes.

Virtual keyboard is hard to get used to. Sinceit involves typing in thin air, it requires alittle practice. Only people who are good attyping can use a virtual keyboard efficiently.
It is very costly ranging from 150 to 200dollars.
The room in which the projected keyboard isused should not be very bright so that thekeyboard is properly visible
