Remember…
•focus with a controlling idea or thesis statement
•organize ideas logically
• develop your main points with details and examples
•choose the appropriate stylistic techniques to convince your readerof your purpose
• apply standard English rules for proper grammar, punctuation,spelling, and mechanics
•The difference is that you will be using references to other texts tosupport your thesis. You, the writer, are still the primary source forthe essay; you are the one creating an original thesis and plan forproving the thesis. The references to other texts are the secondarysources that you synthesize with your own logic. Good researchwriting still reveals the student's voice and style; good researchwriting shows the student in control of the sources.
Remember…
•Avoid Plagiarism! Whether quoting, paraphrasing,or summarizing, you MUST cite and document thesource that the material comes from. If you do not,you are guilty of plagiarism. In most cases as fewas three words in a row from a secondary sourcewith no citation or documentation can beconsidered plagiarism!
Quotes
•using the source's exact words and putting quotation marksaround the words
•It's easy to copy and paste what you find on a website. Theproblem is that the words are not your own words. Plagiarismmeans you are stealing someone else's words and ideas andoffering them as your own. At times, you will want to use adirect quotation. Use quotation marks to indicate any wordsthat are not yours but are taken from your source. Be sure tomark where you found the quote so you can add theinformation to your bibliography. The best policy is toparaphrase the information you find and put it into your ownwords. (Burke 522)
•Jim Burke warns of the dangers of copying and pasting frominternet sources, defining plagiarism as “stealing someone else'swords and ideas and offering them as your own" (522)
Paraphrase
•restating the source's words in your own words and in yourown sentence structure

•Students should take just a few notes in direct quotationfrom sources to help minimize the amount of quotedmaterial in a research paper (Lester 46-47).
Below is a quotation followed by three samples, one of whichinadvertently plagiarizes. See if you can identify what each sampleis (a paraphrase or a summary), and see if you can "catch" the onethat inadvertently plagiarizes.
•"Empire State College has a policy describing the conditions under which students maybe warned or withdrawn from the College for such unethical academic behavior asplagiarism, forgery, misrepresentation, or other dishonest or deceptive acts whichconstitute grounds for warning or administrative withdrawal" (Hansen 5)
•Samples:
•1. The Student Handbook states that the College may dismiss students who in any waypresent others' work as their own (Hansen 5)
•2. According to policy in the Student Handbook, Empire State College may take punitiveaction (including dismissal) against students who act fraudulently. Fraudulent actionincludes using the words or ideas of others without proper attribution, falsifyingdocuments, or depicting the words of others as one's own (Hansen 5)
•3. The Student Handbook states that the College has a policy that describes the differentinstances under which students may be withdrawn from the College. These instancesinclude plagiarism, forgery, misrepresentation, and other instances that show dishonestor deceptive practice (Hansen 5)
Explanation
•Number 1 is the summary; it has condensed thesource and articulates the main idea.
•Number 2 is an appropriate paraphrase. The writerhas used her own words and sentence structure torelate the essence of the source.
•Number 3 is a paraphrase that inadvertentlyplagiarizes because it retains too much of thesource's language and sentence structure.
