Katie’s Plan: I’m going to use 2 days since we will be testing later than I thought. Feel free to doas many or as little of these steps as you would like of course.
.Hunger bell ringer (next slide)
.Go over definitions students will need to know (you can just go over them, have studentswrite them down, create Frayers, or whatever you choose)
.Go over Hunger Facts (included in this PowerPoint)
.Have kids brainstorm causes of hunger in Africa with a partner or in a small group (do this onGraphic Organizer)
.Watch Hunger YouTube videos (I’ve included 3 to choose from at the end of this PowerPoint)& add notes/explanations to graphic organizers. Share some answers as a class after eachvideo or just discuss as a whole group at the very end. Students can add to their graphicorganizers as you see fit. In order to have several ideas, this is going to take some extradiscussion. I’ve included a filled out graphic organizer for your convenience.
.Get back in groups and try to come up with at least 3 solutions that would address hungerproblems. Add these to graphic organizers. (You could also have them brainstormindividually and do a think/pair/share type thing.)
.Share possible solutions as a class and write a class list of answers on the SmartBoard.
.Students will write 1 paragraph about what they think is the single best solution foraddressing hunger problems in Africa & why. (You could also have them write a longer essaytalking about hunger problems, their causes, and possible solutions. You could also do aRAFT where students pretend they are starving & write a letter to the U.S. asking for help.
