•Penny: A penny is worth 1 cent.

Why Do We Need toMake Change?

•It is important to know how to make change whenbuying items we like or need. We have to countmoney when shopping at the grocery store, orbuying gifts for our friends.

How Many Does It Take to Make$1?

•Since a penny is worth1 cent, it takes 100pennies to make $1.

•Since a nickel is worth5 cents, it takes 20nickels to make $1.

•Since a dime is worth10 cents, it takes 10dimes to make $1.

•Since a quarter isworth 25 cents, ittakes 4 quarters tomake $1.

How Do We MakeChange?

•To make change for one dollar, we mustuse SUBTRACTION.

–[We know 1 dollar is the same as 100 cents, sowe subtract the value we are paying from 100cents.]

•For example, if we go to buy our friend a gift for 50cents, we will subtract 50 cents from 100 cents.

»100cents – 50cents = 50cents

»[So, we are left with 50 cents after we pay using 1dollar.]

What Can We Expect?

•In the last problem we know we were left with 50 cents.What types of coins could we expect from the cashier if weare getting 50 cents? We can use SUBTRACTION again orADDITION to solve this problem.

–We could have 2 quarters, because 1 quarter is25 cents, and 50-25=25.

–We could have 5 dimes, because10+10+10+10+10=50.

•There are many different types of coins we could receivethat would add up to 50 cents!
