Before the arrival of Europeanexplorers like Columbus and JohnSmith, American Indians (FirstAmericans) were living throughoutthe many different regions andenvironments in North America.Their adaptations are astounding.

Inuit

•Inhabited present day Alaskaand northern Canada

•Lived in arctic areas wheretemperatures are belowfreezing most of the year

•Famous for their ceremonialigloos

•Ate Fish/whale, seals, bear andMoose

Kwakiutl

•Inhabited the Pacific Northwestcoast

•Lived in areas characterized byrainy, mild climates

•Lived in Plank homes made of largeRedwood trees

•Ate fish, berries, and wild gamefrom the forests

•Famous for their Totem Poles andextravagant ceremonies calledPotlatches

Sioux

•Inhabited the interior lowlandsregion of the USA

•Lived in area characterized bydry, grasslands (Great Plains)

•Lived in tepees that were madefrom the animal skins theyhunted

•Hunted buffalo, antelope anddeer

•Used every part of the huntedanimals for food, tools or shelter

Pueblo

•Inhabited the Southwest inpresent-day Utah, Colorado,Arizona and New Mexico

•Lived in desert area andareas bordering cliffs andmountains

•Used farming techniquesand ate corn, beans andsquash (the three sisters)

•Lived in homes made of theadobe mud in the region,called adobe homes

•Their homes resembledapartments

Iroquois

•Inhabited northeast NorthAmerica

•Lived in areas called theEastern Woodlands which areheavily forested

•Used farming techniques togrow corn, beans and squash(Three Sisters)

•Hunted the wild game of theAppalachian forests

•Lived in Long Houses madefrom the variety of Pine treesin the area
