As a member of BCTP, you may cause inordinateconcern and activity if you ask a direct questionto a division or brigade soldier. Units consideryou an evaluator and often react to yourquestions. Instead, attempt to answer yourquestions by observing—looking at charts,listening to conversations, checking maps, logs,etc.

As a fellow professional, you will want thesoldiers and unit to do well during the exercise.This prompts the temptation to help the unit. Thedanger is that the unit will do whatever you say,and concurrently, they will hold you responsiblefor any outcome, favorable or unfavorable.Remain somewhat distant and impartial.

Sometimes AAR requirements will drive you toreturn for specific information. The degree ofimportance and urgency will warrant violating theHeisenburg Principle. The commander of BCTP,COG, or a senior observer may direct you to getkey information. You may have to get theinformation by “brute force,” far exceeding theHeisenburg effect by figuratively applying theHeimlich Maneuver.

OC’s conduct informal counterpart AARs withunit personnel using the CTC “ DiscoveryLearning” methodology. Informal counter partAARs are conducted at about the midpoint of theWFX and after the ENDEX.

–Establish what happened.
–Determine what was right or wrong with whathappened.
–Determine how the task should be donedifferently the next time.

•Establish what happened.
–The evaluator and the participants determine whatactually happened during performance of thetraining task. For force-on-force training, OPFORmembers assist in describing the flow of thetraining event and discuss training outcomes fromtheir points of view

•Determine what was right or wrong withwhat happened.
–The participants establish the strong and weakpoints of their performance. The evaluator plays acritical role in guiding the discussions so thatconclusions reached by participants are doctrinallysound, consistent with Army standards, andrelevant to the wartime mission.

•Determine how the task should be donedifferently the next time.
–The evaluator leads the group in determiningexactly how participants will perform differently thenext time the task is performed. This results inorganizational and individual motivation to conductfuture sustainment training at desired levels ofproficiency.

•Perform the task again.
–This is done as soon as possible to translateobservation and evaluation into corrective action.Additional training allows the participants to applythe lessons learned during the AAR. Leadersunderstand that all tasks will not be performed tostandard. Therefore, during the short-range andnear-term planning process, they provide flexibilityin training events and schedules which allow foradditional training immediately following the AAR.
