What is systematicphonics teaching?
This teaches children the linkbetween graphemes in writtenlanguage and phonemes inspoken language, and how touse these links to read andspell.
Oral blending:
•Hearing a series of spoken sounds(phonemes) and merging themtogether to make a spoken word.No text is used.
•For example, ‘Can you get me atin of b-ea-n-s? ‘Where is thep-e-n?’
•Letters: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
•Some of the 140 (approx.) letter combinations illustrated withinwords:

What is a phoneme?
A phoneme is the smallestunit of sound and cancomprise of more thanletter.

      symbol for a phoneme.
•Digraph
•2 letters that make 1 phoneme
•ee (feet), ch (chip), oa (boat)
•Trigraph
•3 letters that make 1 phoneme
•igh (night), dge (edge)
•Split digraph
•o-e hope

•u-e cube
•i-e dive
•Segmenting words forspelling. (finger counting)
•Blending for reading(running finger along)
•And that these arereversible processes
•Reception
•Beginning of systematic highquality phonic work(grapheme phonemecorrespondence)

•Learn 1 representation for atleast 42 of the 44 phonemes ofBritish Received Pronunciation
•Children should be workingsecurely in this phase by theend of Reception

How can you helpyour child athome?
•How many items can your child findthat begin with ‘m’?
•Can your child make something thatbegins with ‘s’ using playdough?
•Can you find something in thesupermarket beginning with ‘b’?
•Play ‘I-spy’ using this weeks letter
sounds.
•Can your child see a particularletter in a book or outside?
•Put several items on a tray thatall begin with the same sound andone that begins with a differentsound. Can your child tell you theodd one out?
If your child is ready to start
writing letters, please help
them to write lower case letters
only.
Please encourage your child to
use our ‘Penpal’ script.
Children may like to do this
outside using chalk or water and a
large paint brush.
If your child knows all their
letter sounds and is able to write
them, they may like to write a
list of words beginning with each
sound and bring it in to share
with the class.
Please help your child to write
the sounds they can hear
in each word.
Most important of all:
•Only carry out activitiesfor 5 or 10 minutes, but ona regular basis.
•Be positive and use lots ofpraise.
