•Assist in preparing for and attending ahearing.

•Do legal research

•Interview witnesses

•Manage evidence

•Draft legal documents, such as contractsor divorce papers.

Building a court case:

•Paralegals work independently but underthe instructions of a lawyer.

It would be an over simplification to say thatCorrections officers work only in jails, thatpolice officers ride around in cars, and thatfishery officers only work on boats.

There are a number of career fields that anindividual can pursue if they havecertification and education in corrections,law, security, and policing.

•Currently in Canada, corrections officerswork in correctional facilities, transitionhomes, as parole and probation officersand within the restorative justice field.

•Their job remains the same; they act asthe primary contact for all offenders.

A short history of Policing in Canada

•Originally in Canada bar owners wereresponsible for keeping the peace.

•The first police officers acted not only as policebut as jailers, tax collectors, sanitary inspectors,and fire department engineers!

•The RCMP began when local police refused tokeep the peace between labourers andemployers, especially during strikes.

Policing in Canada

•For most of Canada, there is a federalpolice force, the RCMP, and there is amunicipal police force, like the HRP.

•Since the 1920s, the RCMP have steadilytaken on contracts with provinces andsmaller municipalities to maintain orderand law.

Military Police

Military Police serve the Canadian forces.With 1,250 full-time members, militarypolice are the largest police force inCanada.

Military Police work in conjunction withcivilian and allied military police forces.

Working as a Fisheries Officer

By definition, a fishery officer is expected toenforce the Fisheries Act and all other relatedActs and Regulations. They do so by air, landand sea.

Fishery Officers protect resources and fish habitatsby doing patrols. They are also called upon toeducate and promote awareness of programsoffered by the Department.

•Takes care and maintains Crown lands

•Ascertains that laws towards Crown Lands andthe resources on Crown Lands are being utilizedcorrectly.

•Spends most of their days out in the field.

Success College provides a two yeardiploma program in Corrections andPolicing foundations. Applicants need tobe 19 by graduation in order to graduate.

We are not a prerequisite for the RCMP orany municipal police force. Our program isa prerequisite for the Military Police.
