What is ITSO?
ITSO is a membershiporganisation (hence not aprofit distributor)
ITSO was created to solvethe challenge ofimplementing multi-playersmartcard scenarios,(focused initially ontransportation)

To facilitate the developmentof an interoperable smartenvironment by developingand then operating andmanaging a specificationfor an interoperable smartticketing environment.

•ITSO provides the potentialfor a national environmentwithin a single securitydomain facilitating “Martini”.
For the User
•ITSO can facilitate
–Purchase a ticket at any ITSOparticipating location
–Use the “ticket” at any ITSOparticipating location
•(Gives True Interoperability)
For the (Service) Operator
•Implement an ITSO service inthe knowledge that:
–Service can participate in any ITSOscheme
–Media can be used interoperably(with suitable commercial productagreements)
–Systems and Equipment are notproprietary
–Additional Add-ons may be madewith confidence that the new willwork with the old.
For the (Scheme) Operator
•Implement an ITSO scheme inthe knowledge that:
–Media can be used interoperably(with suitable commercial productagreements)
–Systems and Equipment are notproprietary

For the Supplier
•Suppliers are being encouragedto develop their equipment tobecome ITSO compliant.
•Clearly this means an end to“proprietary schemes”.
•But once development iscomplete facilitates entry tootherwise “closed” areas of themarket.
How Much Will ITSOcost in Scotland?
•About 0.1% of AnnualTurnover once mature
•(<£200k on £211million t/o)
•Take up costs around £150k
•ISAMs around £250k(assumes 5000 purchased

•ITSO provides the capability tointer-operate both between (interand intra) schemes and modesof transport with an industry widestandard framework that worksfor all.
•This allows for a number oflevels within the environmentand can facilitate a single ITSOmembership for the entireScottish Public sector.
