Click on the tab to find journals bySubjects. From the drop downmenu, we will select Parasitologyand Parasitic Diseases.

An alphabetical list of Parasitology and ParasiticDiseases journals is now displayed with links to thejournal websites. Click on the title Journal ofParasitology. After the title of the journal, theavailable volumes/issues are added.

Note that we are looking at the Accessible Contenttab for an institution with full access – so there aremany parasitology journals listed.

By clicking on a journal title, youwill open the journal in a newwindow: Journal of Parasitology.

For the Parasitology and ParasiticDiseases journals, we have opened theAll Items tab for an institution wheresome publishers have not grantedaccess to their material. Note the whitebox with the exclamation point – forjournals that cannot be accessed.

To find journals by language ofpublication, click on the Languagesbar in the horizontal frame. TheLanguages drop down menu appearand we will choose French.

An alphabetical list of French languagejournals is displayed.

The ‘green’ box notes the access statusfor your institution.

Note: The editors decide the languagesaccepted by the journal. Some includearticles in multiple languages.

Select a title from the list and a newwindow will open at the publishers’website: Primary Care: Journal Suissede Medicine de Premier Recours.

We have displayed the Browsepublisher drop down menu. ThisYou have full access to: list for aninstitution where all the material isincluded in the publishers’ offer.

We have displayed the Browse publisher – NaturePublishing Group Accessible Content list. It is an examplefrom a institution where the all the Nature titles areincluded in publisher’s offer - noted by the green boxes.

Note again the Display Option dropdown list and ability to move from onepage of the A book titles list to another.

We now will scroll down and viewthe Publishers list of journals as aninstitution that does not have fullaccess to the publishers resources.

We now have opened the Browse publisher – Nature PublishingCompany tab- as an institution where the titles are not includedin the publisher’s offer. The default is the Accessible Contentpage and no journals are listed. If you click on the All Items tab,you can view the journal titles that your institution does not haveaccess to – for this publisher. Check other publishers to see ifthe journals are accessible or not.

We now have opened the Browsepublisher – Nature Publishing CompanyAll Items list. For this institution wherethe titles are not included in thepublisher’s offer, all the titles have the !.

To find books by title, click on the appropriateBooks collection alphabetical letter.

Note that there is a View complete list ofbooks option although this list does not havehypertext links to the specific titles. You willneed to go back to the Books collection A-Zlist to open any e-books.

Now opened is the O list from theBooks collection A-Z list. This exampleis for an institution where the titles areincluded in the publishers’ offer.

We now have opened is the O list from the Bookscollection A-Z list - for an institution where manytitles are not included in the publishers’ offer.Note that there are only 7 items (2 publishers) inthe Accessible Content list. In the All Items displayoption, most of the titles will have the white boxwith the ! exclamation point.

The Oxford Textbook of Medicine is one of the foremost internationaltextbooks of internal medicine. It provides practical guidance on theclinical management and prevention of disease, with in-depth coverage ofthe traditional specialty areas. Scroll down this page to the ‘expandable’table of contents that details the contents of each topic.

We have opened the American PsychiatricAssociation Textbook of GeriatricPsychiatry e-book that is searchable bykeyword and broad subject categories.

From the HINARI Portal, you also can open the Searchinside HINARI full-text through database and articlesearching, Reference sources and Free collections lists.

Note: Many of these resources are underutilized by HINARIusers as most individuals concentrate on obtaining full-textjournal articles.

Via clicking on the Search inside HINARI…link, we have opened the Browsedatabases A-Z list.

Similar to other access points, there are theAccessible Content and All Items listingsthat depend on the Publishers’ offers.

Searching in Google Scholar has been discussed in the previousmodule – Basic Course Module 2. This tool searches for academicmaterial and, via the links in the search result’s right column, you canaccess full-text material including what is available from HINARI.

Note: you must use the HINARI link to Scholar or you will be asked tologin (individually) or pay for the article. Also, if the publisher doesnot grant access to your institution, the Scholar links will not work.

We have opened the initial page of Scopus (Elsevier), a large abstract andcitation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources withsmart tools to track and analyze research.

Being from a HINARI registered institution, and having logged into HINARI,you will be able to use these resources from various commercial publishers.

CINAHL (EBSCO) is another resource from theDatabases and (Bibliographic) Indexes menu. Itprovides indexing for 2,960 journals and can besearched for information on nursing, biomedicine,health sciences librarianship, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and17 allied health disciplines. Via HINARI, many ofthese journals can be accessed.

Now we have clicked on theReference Sources link and openedthe Browse reference sources A-Z list.

Many of these resources contain full-text information on a variety of topics.

Cochrane Library contains high quality ,independent evidence for health care decisionmaking. It includes numerous access optionsincluding via keyword, MeSH terms and categorylistings. Cochrane Library is one of 3 sources ofinformation on evidence-based practice in HINARI.

From the Free Collections drop downmenu, you can access other free e-journalgateways and be able to obtain full-textarticles. We will examine one of these –Highwire Free to Developing Economies.

Within HighWire Press, now opened is the Free Online Full-Text Articles page. Users throughout the world have accessto these articles. Note that some journals are a free site andothers have free articles after a set period of time.

The HINARI eligible country access is a different mix of titles.

Now viewed is PubMed Central, a free digital archive oflife sciences journals created by the U.S. NationalInstitutes of Health. This resource can be searched via akeyword search engine or journal title.

Note: this is different than PubMed, – the biomedicaldatabase from the U.S. National Library of Medicine. –http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ . This will bediscussed in Basic Course Module 4.

The Free Collection menu includes Free OnlineMedical Books page of www.freebookcentre.net- a website that has links to full-text books fornumerous medical and other topics. Thisgateway is searchable by keyword or topic.
