South Sudan has the highest MMR at avg2,054/100,000 live births in the world

PPH is a leading cause of maternal death inAfrica

Every intervention is needed to reduce MMR

Participation of South Sudan at the GlobalMeeting in Addis Ababa in February 2011indicated a government commitment

Uterotonics (oxytocin or misoprostol) areeffective in preventing PPH at birth

Active Management of Third Stage of Labour(AMTSL) is a proven effective strategy

Successful community distribution ofMisoprostol is found to be effective in manyother settings

Generate evidence to inform future policy andprogramme planning to ensure uterotoniccoverage for all women giving birth to preventPPH using both facility-based andcommunity-based approaches in S. Sudan.

Specific objectives

To assess if the use of antenatal care visits(ANC) and community-based distributionthrough community health workers is aneffective mechanism

To assess the use and coverage ofmisoprostol for home births

To determine if misoprostol is acceptable toSouth Sudanese women and their families forPPH prevention.

To assess if the availability of misoprostol forpreventing PPH at home births affects skilledbirth attendance coverage at facilities

To determine the proportion of women withvaginal births who receive a uterotonicimmediately after birth to standard by skilledproviders.
