Scientific MethodVocabulary Review
The steps scientists take to create, test, and prove a hypothesis
Scientific process
The act of noting and recording anythingdetected with an instrument or senses
Observation
Quantitative observation
Something that can be expressed in numbersEx: time, temperature, mass, distance, volume
Qualitative observation
Something that includes a description
Ex: sight, sound, smell, color, hard, soft
Predicting
An expectations of what will be observedor what will happen
hypothesis
A tentative explanation for an observationthat can be tested by further investigation
inference
a logical conclusion drawn from theavailable evidence and prior knowledge
experiment
an organized procedure used to prove ahypothesis
variable
any factor that can change in anexperiment
constant
all of the factors that stay in same in anexperiment
Independent variable
the factor that I change in theexperiment
Dependent variable
the factor that you measure to gatherresults in the experiment
Control group
the group that stays the same in theexperiment; never changes. Is the “normal”
Experimental group
the group that you change in theexperiment
