Purpose
To review programs and softwarethat may put you and yourcomputer at risk.
Ways to protect your information.
Malware or Badware
In legal terms, known as a“computer contaminant”.
Refers to software intended to gainaccess to or damage a computersystem without the owner'sinformed consent.
Comes in many types of aggressive,invasive, or annoying software orprogram code

Attaches itself to a program in the computer
Runs when the program opens
Damages/Changes files
Worm-
Takes advantage of unprotected areas inoperating systems
Makes copies of itself and can spread to othercomputers on the same network
Very commonly written for Windows
Greyware
Adware
Files that are packaged with otherprograms that automatically advertisematerials
Spyware
Software that takes some control ofyour computer in order to redirect yousomewhere, advertise, or obtainpersonal information

Phishing
Items such as emails and IMs thattry to persuade you to give thempersonal information: passwords,social security numbers,usernames, etc.
Unlimited ways of what they can tryto do in order to get yourinformation
Not to do:
Do not click on links from emails.Type them in on the address bar.
Do not download files when you areunsure of whom they are from.
Do not give your password toanyone in an email.
Companies do not ask for passwordsvia email.
Ways to Protect
Close pop-ups.
Be choosy of the websites you visit.
Carefully choose what informationyou post online about yourself.
Be careful of which websites youchoose to shop online from.
Choose passwords that aren’t easilyguessable.

Constantly Update Antivirus!
New viruses and malware areconstantly being developed.
Download updated anti-virusdefinitions at least once a week,and ideally every day.
Protect your information!!
What to Do if You Get a Virus
oDownload the newest anti-virusdefinitions from the Symantecwebsite, and run a full virus scan.Usually, Symantec will be able toquarantine the infected files.
oIf the virus is on one of our labcomputers, tell the lab manager.
oIf the virus is on your personalcomputer and you have difficultyremoving it, ask for help from OIT.
