0Give the person your full attention.
0Tell that person that you care and are gladthat s/he is talking with you.
0Share your concern for the person’s safety.
0Help the person feel more safe and incontrol.
0Encourage the person to talk about her/hisfeeling.
0Validate the person’s feelings.
0Repeat back in your own worked what youheard the person say.

0Do not interrupt.
0Do not judge before you finish listening.
0Do not say the person’s feelings or actionsare unimportant, overreacting or wrong.
0Do not tell the person what to do.
0Do not try to solve the person’s problems.
0Do not provoke guilt about how theperson’s family and friends might feel.
0Do not offer false hope.
